Director Praveen Sri reportedly narrated an action subject and it impressed Jagapathi Babu so much as it was prepared as a sequel to his career-best action film Gayam. With no second thought he agreed to do the flick. Praveen Sri is a protege of Ram Gopal Varma. Of course, the action scenes in this film remind us the old film Gayam and the story was perfectly mixed to make everyone believe that the story is a continuation of Gayam. However, what exactly the director wanted to convey to audiences was a big question mark which remain unanswered.
Cast:
Jagapathi Babu, Vimala Raman, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Tanikella Bharani, Kota Prasad, Ajay, Jeeva, Harshavardhan, Ravi Kale, Tarjan, Raghunatha Reddy, Master Pavan Sriram and others
Story:
Rams (Jagapathi Babu) runs a restaurant in Bangkok and stays with his wife Divya (Vimala Ramana) and son. One day a composed Rams kill two dacoits to save a woman in his restaurant. Guru Narayan (Kota Srinivas Rao) sees this news in TV and immediately sends his lawyer Thannikela Bharani and son Shankar Narayan (late Kota Prasad) to Bangkok to find out whether this Rams is the same Durga or not? The plot unveils when the duo discover that Rams and Durga are same. And the aftermath – it’s all about how Rams reincarnate into the once powerful Durga and lock horn with Guru Narayan.
Analysis:
The director and producer should be complimented for portraying the present political situation on the screen perfectly and the audiences would definitely equate Kota’s character with KCR in several scenes. Though it is a coincidence, the film had many similarities to the present political turmoil in the state like Telangana stir and others. Though the action scenes in the film are okay, it is just not known what the director exactly wanted to tell the audiences with this film.
Performances:
Jagapathi Babu has done it before so he didn’t have to strain much, however, he still maintains that intensity in his eyes and the icy violence in his baritone voice.
Vimala Raman is a screen scorcher, though her role is domestic, she shows her wild side in one song which is enough visual feast. She is a tempting seductress blended with good acting skills.
Kota Srinivasa Rao is the show stealer. Despite so many years, his class as an actor and his typical Telangana style dialogues are excellent.
Tanikella was another impressive performer. His character has got length and he fits into it with perfect caliber and screen presence.
Kota Prasad’s performance was effective, he has carried out his role with ease and the right kind of emotions. It is sad that we have lost a fine actor…
Ajay was brief, Ravi Kale was regular, Jeeva was natural, Tarzan was funny, Harshavardhan was average, Nagesh was a new face who is to be watched out for, he has shown potential, the others were there to fill the screen and contributed in their own way.
Credits:
Cinematography – Anil Bhandari, Editing – Praveen Pudi, Dialogues – Gandham Nagaraju, Mallu Ravi Reddy, Screenplay – Rajendra Reddy, Art – Dharmendra, Music – Ilayaraja, Presents – Ram Gopal Varma, Producer – Dr Dharmakartha C, Story and direction – Praveen Sri.
Technicalities:
Maestro Ilayaraja has scored the music, but he has past his prime and seems to have lost touch. The lyrics are not insightful and information like in Gaayam, where Sirinivennala Seetharama Sastry chipped in.
The background score is good in parts and perhaps editing should have been better. The Cinematography is great and the first half of the movie looks like a visual feast in terms of locations and camera work.
To conclude Gaayam 2, it is an honest and sincere attempt by Praveen Sri. However, the movie lacks the required exploit, voltage, political conspiracy and thump to strike the box office.
